So before I go any further I must say that this my experience with THIS PARTICULAR PRODUCTION of PROMENADE. This is not an attack on Maria Irene Fornes (whom I love) or Rev. Al Carmines. That said, if someone wants to tell me what the show is about please comment below. This, though, is a riff on the why this production was chosen to be performed by CCNY in 2013. And if this was an experimental show (as it's listed) why was it directed with such a straight forward lens that made the material look not nuanced but bad. The pictures are nice. So I got some good social media from it. It was one of the few times I could not even tell you what the show was about. At one point, in a long rehearsal, I gave up trying to find a through-line of this production. I could outline/track my character, but that was it. So MY Promenade was the Mark show. I decided to have fun, enjoy myself, stay in my lane, but just let whatever happened happen. All the pressure was gone. I just played. It was freeing. I don't think it was entertaining in the long run. but it was freeing. I still dont understand why we submitted the college audience to that show. This production wasn't going to turn any non fans into fans of musical theatre. They were, instead, going to walk out saying "what the fuck" and all I could think was... "Us too guys. Us too."
