Shining in Misery

A KING-Size Parody

 Music By Andrew Abrams
Lyrics by Mark-Eugene Garcia
Book by Colleen DuVall and Mark-Eugene Garcia
Based on an original story by Colleen DuVall
Experience a musical parody of King size proportions! During the Misery of a blizzard, five people are drawn to the Shining lights of the Overlook Hotel. The group includes Jack: the hotel’s new caretaker, Wendy: his unhappy wife, Danny: their clairvoyant son, Annie: a quick to anger nurse, and Paul: the mysterious unconscious man she drags up to room 217. As the storm grows so do the mysteries of the hotel and the new guests sing and vocalize while hacking an onslaught of visitors — human, animal, and supernatural. Will this group be able to harmonize through IT, take a Stand, or fade into The Mist?
"Shining in Misery: A King-Size Parody" premiered as part of the World Premiere Wisconsin theatre festival, an inaugural statewide celebration dedicated to showcasing new plays and musicals. Under the direction and choreography of Donald Garverick, with musical direction from Evan Lange and artistic direction led by Andrew Abrams.

The cast included  Gail Becker, Cody Gerszewskl, Madeline Glenn Thomas, Alex Gossard, Benji Heying, Erin McConnell, Jonathan Wagner, and Jason Williams. The creative team included Kelly Zipperer as the Hair/Makeup Designer, TJ Young as the Sound Designer, Will Karls as the Props Master, Kevin Gawley as the Lighting/Scenic Designer, Leslie Frank as the Scenic Painter, Nicky Jasper as the Fight Choreographer and Alexis Wiley as Stage Manager.

The band included Evan Lange serving as the Music Director and Orchestrator, as well as handling Keyboard 1. Lizzie Anne Haller on Keyboard 2, Brett Walter on Drums, Carl Davick on Bass, Rami Alshibli on Guitar, Andrew White on Reed, and Amy Harr on Cello.

“Shining in Misery” floats by for two hours on a wave of cheerful and catchy songs, a talented, high-energy cast of actors, and a barrage of jokes both silly and sublime. You’ll float too." - Rob Thomas, The Cap Times

"From "Carrie" to "The Bazaar of Bad Dreams", Shining in Misery a King Size Parody, covers it all. People from Castle Rock, Derry, and even as far away as Jerusalem's Lot, are raving about this amazing show!"

"The show is a tour-de-force of writing, with performers and technical resources more than up to the challenge. It's a load of fun."- John Chatterton, Talkin' Broadway
